Pfizer, the world’s largest drug company, and GlaxoSmithKline, the U. S. drugmaker, are developing a drug dubbed sildenafil, which treats erectile dysfunction in men.
“In a world where more than $10 billion a year in global sales are driven by high drug costs, we are entering a time of heightened competition,” said company chief executive officer Albert Bourla.
Sildenafil, a combination of the active ingredient, fildenflurane, and the inhibitor, flibanserin, is one of the main drugs used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It’s used as the first of its kind.
“We’re very focused on this,” said Bourla, who is president of GlaxoSmithKline’s business unit in San Francisco. “We are focused on bringing down the price of drugs.”
The new drug, called Sildenafil XR, is approved by the U. Food and Drug Administration in the United States, but is not officially released to the public.
Sildenafil XR has been used in Europe for more than a decade and has been shown to be effective in more than 80 percent of men with ED. The drug is available as an oral pill or as a capsule.
But some doctors are concerned about the safety of its use.
In March 2018, a British study found that some men who took sildenafil twice a day had a slightly higher incidence of heart disease than those who didn’t take it.

“We’re excited to work with GlaxoSmithKline and the drugmaker. We’re really focused on bringing down the price of drugs.”
